Every day, markets are flooded with news.
Gold doubled this year
Russia invaded Ukraine
USA bombed XYZ region
Nvidia got a massive contract
India signed a new trade deal
Rupee vs Dollar headlines
Interest rates, elections, geopolitics, AI hype…
Most traders feel they must react to all this.
I don’t.
Not because news is useless —
but because unfiltered news is dangerous.
So I use a very simple framework.
The 3-Question Filter I Use for Every News Item
Whenever I consume any news — breaking or long-form — I ask just three questions:
1. Does this help me prevent blowing up my account?
Does this news change:
- My risk per trade?
- My exposure?
- My need to reduce position size?
- My need to avoid certain sectors?
If it helps me protect capital → it matters.
If not → it’s noise.
2. Does this help me identify what to buy?
Does this news help me:
- Narrow down sectors to focus on?
- Identify stocks that may see institutional interest?
- Strengthen the narrative behind existing leaders?
If it improves my watchlist quality → it matters.
If it just creates excitement without structure → ignore.
3. Does this help me time my entry or exit?
This is the most important filter.
Does the news:
- Improve my chart context?
- Confirm strength during breakout?
- Explain abnormal volume?
- Affect my exit logic?
If it doesn’t change my execution decision, it doesn’t deserve my attention.
The Reality: Most News Fails All Three
Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
For most days
For most headlines
For most “breaking news”
The answer to all three questions is:
❌ No
❌ No
❌ No
Which means:
- No action needed
- No thinking needed
- No emotional reaction needed
I simply move on.
This One Habit Protects You From:
- Overtrading
- Panic decisions
- Chasing shiny assets
- Narrative addiction
- Emotional exhaustion
- Strategy drift
It keeps you focused on:
- Process
- Structure
- Risk
- Charts
- Execution
Which is where real edge lives.
How You Can Start Using This Immediately
The next time you see any market news, pause and ask:
Does this help me
- Protect my capital?
- Identify what to buy?
- Improve my timing?
If the answer is YES to even one → study it deeper.
If the answer is NO to all three → scroll past without guilt.
Final Thought
Markets reward clarity, not consumption.
You don’t need more news.
You need better filters.
